Gisborne

Wine Regions

Gisborne is one of the larger wine producing regions, yet it only has a relatively small number of wineries. This is largely due to the fact that much of the regions production is used by large Auckland-based companies. Gisborne is best known for its Chardonnay, which has lead to many in the region claiming that Gisborne is New Zealand’s Chardonnay capital.

There may not be the number of wineries to visit as in other regions. However, Gisborne has its own special charm as tourism destination. Due to it eastern location, Gisborne is also the first place in the world to see the new light of day each morning.

Production area 2004: 1810 hectares
Principal Varieties: Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Merlot, Muller Thurgau, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon
