Northland is one of the smallest
wine producing regions in New Zealand. However, it was in Northland that
the first grapes were planted in New Zealand. Today there are small plantings
near Kaitaia, Kerikeri, Russell, and Whangarei. While Matakana near Warkworth,
has the largest plantings in the region. Wines coming from Matakana have
shown some potential for excellence, which is helping the regions reputation
to grow.
Many wineries in Northland have restaurants and
tasting rooms which provide the ideal atmosphere
to fully appreciate the regions wine and food.
There is also a wide range of options when to
come to place to eat and stay. Northland also
has numerous tourist attractions, and has the
warmest climate of any region in New Zealand.
Production area 2004: 591 hectares (includes
Auckland)
