Waipara

WINE REGIONS

Click here to Buy New Zealand Wine OnlineWaipara has been seen in the past as a sub region of the Canterbury region. However in recent years its reputation and new plantings have grown to the point that its now deserves its new found status. The region also has a warmer climate than its southern neighbour due to protection offered by coastal hills.

Waipara has shown that it can produce great Pinot Noir, Riesling and Chardonnay. In recent years Montana, New Zealand's largest wine company, has undertaken significant plantings in the region.

Waipara is about an hour north of Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand. This means that a tour of the wineries of Waipara can be a pleasant day trip for those based in Christchurch.

Production area 2004: 716 hectares (includes Canterbury)
Principal Varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc
